[00:00:02] Hi everyone and welcome to the Monomyth Diaries, a bi-monthly podcast where ordinary people get to share their hero's journey. I'm Mandi and I'm Karen and we'll be your hosts. Each episode will feature a hero who will share their journey of growth.
[00:00:17] We'll hear stories about forgiveness, survival, determination, and much more. We're glad you're joining us because we all have a monomyth to share and someone out there needs to hear it. Welcome to our pilot episode. What is Monomyth Diaries? So the Monomyth Diaries started back in January.
[00:00:42] We were at a workout group that I was in charge of and I tasked my girls with running with a purpose and during that run, I told them one, you need to tell the people that you're
[00:00:57] running with one thing that you're super proud of that you've done in your life. The other thing that you're going to have to do is tell something that you're working on this year, a goal, an aspiration, something of that nature.
[00:01:09] And so we all took off and I decided to go first. And when I was running, I was telling the girls about a seminar that I had attended back in November with Tony Robbins.
[00:01:22] It was a four day seminar where I got to walk on fire and I was super proud of that. That opportunity really did change my life. I realized that if I could walk on fire, I could do anything.
[00:01:36] And then I told them that over the course of the next year, I wanted to tell my story. And I thought at the time that I wanted to tell my story through writing a book.
[00:01:49] But after going to this conference with Tony Robbins, I kind of looked at it as a story that people may not read or the audience that I wanted to reach may not read this book. I was trying to figure out what that looked like.
[00:02:03] And so after I went, some of the other girls started sharing their stories and I found them so inspirational during this time. And I was like, let's start a podcast. And so that's how we started.
[00:02:15] And a couple of girls and I got together and yeah, just started brainstorming in January and we came up with a bunch of different names over that time. And we ultimately landed on the Monomith Diaries. So why the title Monomith Diaries? What's that about? Oh gosh.
[00:02:34] So again, back to the Tony Robbins thing. Back in November when I went to this conference, one of the parts of his seminar, he talks about a Monomith journey. And Joseph Campbell, back in I think like the 1940s popularized this idea that some of the
[00:02:51] most successful stories over time were told in a very similar fashion. Star Wars is a Monomith. The Wizard of Oz is a Monomith. And it goes from telling of a character starting in a particular world, which they call the ordinary world.
[00:03:09] And they go through a transformative journey where they're kind of forced to overcome some sort of obstacle and then come out on the other side with some growth. So I first was introduced to the idea of a Monomith through that seminar.
[00:03:29] And then while you and I were sitting around talking, I thought of, I wanted to pull these stories together so that people could access them pretty easily. And I wanted it to be ordinary people, just people in your community, no experts, yeah,
[00:03:52] no famous people, just ordinary people sharing a story because I feel like people can connect very intimately when we share some of the hardships that we had, some of the conflicts and the things that we've overcome.
[00:04:08] And so I felt like because these are super personal, it's sort of like a diary where you write down some of your deepest darkest secrets. And so yeah, I thought Monomith brings up all of the hero's journey part and Diaries
[00:04:21] brings up the vulnerability and the intimacy of sharing those stories with one another so that we can grow from one another. So yeah, that's what I came from. It's awesome because I feel like everybody has something to learn from one another and
[00:04:36] everybody has something to teach one another. So it's a really incredible experience to be here. So Monomith Diaries is a monthly podcast where we will put the spotlight on a particular hero and join them on their journey.
[00:04:50] We're super excited to be sharing stories of transformation and we look forward to growing with you. Thanks for joining us. Thank you for joining us today.
